Full time work should entitle someone to enough pay for rent, food, bills, and leisure activities. Full time work for a full life wage. You put in your 8 hours a day, 5 days a week? You should be able to afford the basic shit you need in life, no matter where you work.
pisses me off that this is considered a radical statement.
Get a job that pays that well, then.
All jobs SHOULD pay well. That’s the point.
youre right, they should.
what do you propose to fix this?
Minimum wage should be a mandated living wage. Like what minimum wage was always intended to be.
that would cause the value of the dollar to drop like a stone ,in the sense that everything price wise would spike. if a burger flipper can make 20 dollars an hour, someone making 20 dollars an hour now would be making 50, and so on.
all that would do is make everything effectively cost twice as much and we will be right back where we started, but with the value of the dollar effectively halved.
…it would also cause all but a single employee at these low end jobs (per shift) with automation doing everything else, as you only have to pay that once aside from maintenance and utilities, due to the cost of keeping a full staff at that point.
gas stations, aside from the manager, would turn into giant vending machines where a clerk is not needed to aquire anything within the store.
granted, government job wages would go up as well. and stay up. so the most secure job to have would be some level of government work.
…for a high percentage of people, it would either be govt work or foodstamps and unless someone already owned their home outright they would probably lose it, being unable to afford the new prices.
…basically what im saying is, paying a “career wage” at a “stepping stone” job will completely and utterly destroy both the US dollar and the economy at large. as well as quite literally double our national debt since the value of the dollar will be halved.
valued workers are paid a valued workers wage. minimum wage workers are easily replaced by the next ready-to-work 16 year old in line.
as i said when i reblogged you before.
get a job that pays for your living expenses.
i personally know a plumber who has 2 kids and owns his home, several vehicles, and is not struggling much at all.
i work at a low end job, and im not afraid to admit that im not worth much at face value at work, however, i am less worthless at my job due to the basic handyman work i also do around the store during my 3rd shift when i can. (keeping machines at 100% with basic upkeep that doesnt require major repairs, fixing small broken things. minor plumbing/electrical work, etc) granted, my boss didnt ask me to do it, but because of my abilty to fix and maintain our machinery and electricals so something *doesnt*go wrong. i am more valued then some drone who stand behind the counter all day.
i can say, with absolute certainty, that i am the single most valued cashier at my gas station because of what i am able to do outside of my job description. and i am, in fact, paid for my services. if something breaks and i fix it, my boss drops an extra 20 bucks or more in my paycheck depending on the severity.
…you have to be worth paying a living wage to earn a living wage.
or. demand a living wage when you apply for a job.
if that works out, good for you.
if it doesnt. there is always section 8 housing and foodstamps.
So you’re argument is that capitalism is only possible by exploiting workers and paying them less than a living wage? Interesting observation.
And anyway, you’re wrong about inflation.

Also not everyone who works at minimum wage jobs is a 16 old part timer, what happens when you’re an adult that has trouble getting the other jobs, so the ones are the most acessible. Some of them who work there have degrees and families even! Are you saying its fine to pay them a pitiance for their work in this shitty job market nowadays?
